Get to Know Stefanus Bernard

Stefanus Bernard is a bioinformatics research scientist who is well passionate and self-motivated in studying Next Generation Sequencing data to explore human-related diseases. He developed an interest in studying cancer genomics during his undergraduate studies. However, during the pandemic and in his final year, he conducted research on the bioinformatics pipelines for SARS-CoV-2. This eventually led him to join GSI Lab and spent most of his time assisting the COVID-19 genomic surveillance in Indonesia.

In 2022, he was awarded a fully funded Ph.D. scholarship from the Science Foundation Ireland Centre for Research Training in Genomics Data Science. Currently, he is an active bioinformatics researcher in the Santocanale's research group led by Prof. Corrado Santocanale under the Centre for Chromosome Biology at the University of Galway. He is working on the functional genomics analysis of potential drug candidates for cancer therapy using the combination of genome-wide CRISPR/Cas9 knockout screen and a next-generation sequencing approach.
